Role-Playing Games: The Controversy of Fun

Recently, role-playing games of all categories and genres have been experiencing a boom in popularity that has influenced modern society in ways that very few could have ever predicted. This popularity has not been without its troubles, however; since the 1974 release of Dungeons & Dragons, widely considered the first modern role-playing game, these games have been under constant attack by numerous sources, including mass media and various private organizations, resulting in an unfortunate controversy that still exists today.

​​​This website exists as a resource to assist parents who are unfamiliar with role-playing games to better understand the attacks against them. This site will explore what a role-playing game is, the origins of the most common media scares regarding these games, and the reality of those scares. When we understand these things, it becomes easier to analyze new information attacking or supporting role-playing games in our society, and it becomes easier for parents to understand the activities in which their children may be participating.
